We published one illustrated book, “Phytoplankton Species in Hong Kong Coastal Waters”, online in the eBookshelf of The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (https://ebookshelf.ust.hk/flippingbook/G23253/).
This book, which was written in both English and traditional Chinese, mainly focused on the taxonomy and morphology of frequently observed phytoplankton species in Hong Kong coastal waters. A total of 102 species, including diatoms, dinoflagellates, cyanobacteria, silicoflagellates, haptophytes, green algae, cryptophytes, and raphidophytes, were illustrated in this book, sorted by Latin name. Taxonomic position, morphology, brief ecological characteristics, distribution, size, and synonyms were described for each species. The figures of each species were captured during microscopic observation of water samples collected monthly from 25 stations in Hong Kong coastal waters from October 2018 to April 2021.
The book will supplement research on the diversity of phytoplankton in Hong Kong and serve as a reference tool for phytoplankton monitoring in Hong Kong. In addition, it could be read and downloaded freely. With many colorful plots, the book could also be good popular science material for students and citizens to know better about the tiny marine algae in the ocean.
